I wouldn't think that you would have to watch the first one before you see the sequel, because there is an entirely different cast in this one. The idea of the story is the same (people in the desert getting attacked by mutants), but the cast and storyline are completely different. There may be references to the first movie, but that's about all.

My understanding is that for the most part the upcoming release (in 2007) will have little to do with its predecessor (from 2006).

There is an orginal The Hills Have Eyes (1977) which is darker, still violent, and has a much different ending that the recent remake - it is worth renting and I rarely say that about Wes Craven movies.

all you need to know is a family got stranded in the desert and one by one, maimed and killed by interchangable mutants til they're all dead. and no one cares
