World War I started in 1914 when the Austrian army marched into Serbia after the assassination of the Austrian Archduke Ferdinand and his wife. But World War I could have started in any number of ways. Europe was divided into two hostile camps, the Allies which included Britain, France, Russia, & Italy. The other group was the Central Powers, which included Germany, Austria-Hungary and Turkey. Many countries were spoiling for a fight. For instance France wanted Alsalce-Lorraine back and Austria-Hungary wanted Bosnia which would have given them a coastline. World War I was not the fault of any one country although Austria started it.

World War One was started when Austria's Archduke Ferdinand was assassinated in Sarajevo. This led the Austrian government to invade in retaliation. Unfortunately, because of the interconnected series of "mutual defence" pacts, the hostilities spread until most of Europe, and their collective empires was at war. Russia joined in the attack on Germany, but due to her own internal politics ended up in the middle of a bloody civil war before the Great War was over. At the end of this civil war, the Tsars had been eliminated and a Communist government had taken over.

its often considered that world war 1 was started by the extension of nationalism into the global diplomacy frontier. countries began creating exclusive alliances in Europe, essentially dividing the continent into two sides; the triple ententre and the triple alliance. when Ferdinand was assassinated Austria/Hungary waited 3 weeks before truly declaring war, after receiving what is refered to as the blank cheque from Germany to give unconditional support. Austria declared the war, and truly started it. the only thing that takes blame away from them is germany's ethnic feuding, arms race, and overall eagerness to war. also, the alliances forced any conflict to include the entire continent
