A constitution is a form of charter -- a legal document setting forth a framework for the government.

What makes te constitution different than most laws is that they also usually contain some type of supremacy clause, saying that the constitutional requirements override any other (lesser) laws.

The constitution is also usually more difficult to change than the laws. It has to be, otherwise it doesn't provide much protection.

A manifesto is a statement of intent. The US Declaration of Independence was one example.

Britain needs a written constitution becaus their common law rights have been trampled underfoot by successive governments.

However Britain is a member of the UN and its Universal Declaration of Human Rights garauntees our rights and freedoms, such as the right of free speech and to state and publish an opinion.

Of course the gay movement, and the PC brigade and this socialist/communist government hate it, which is why they recently embraced the European Declaration of Human Rights.

Why? Because the UDRH has thirty clauses, with no list of exemptions, while the EUDH has added escape and get out clauses to all thirty original clauses.

Fortunately for us Clause 30 of the UDHR makes it unlawful for any state or country to weaken the righs and freedoms of the UDHR, which make the EDHR, a lawyers delight, but unenforcable.

Download a copy of each act from the internet and judge for yourself.

A consitiution is a set of guiding principles which a society can choose to adhere to. A manifesto is a set of promises offered by a political party which it claims it will implement if it gets into power. The UK doesn't 'need' a constitution because it's social fabric is embedded in history - any talk of needing one comes from ever-changing social make-up of the UK. Manifestos as offered by the 3 main political parties are laundry-lists of lies and false hope!!

The purpose of the Constitution is to limit government power.
