Actually it was dropped down to driving while impaired, but let me give you the details... I have applied for several banking jobs over the passed few weeks, and today one of them asked in a phone pre-interview, "have you ever been convicted of a felony, misdemeanor, driving under the influence, things of that nature?" What? I've always answered "no" to the felony/mis question, but I've never been asked specifically about a DUI, and I didn't think it fell in the same category. Can and will banks really check for this? I really hope my one night of poor judgement hasn't cost me my future in banking! (btw, I answered "no" to this question on the phone today)

Employers can and will check your criminal background. Since they asked "things of that nature," it's incumbent of you to disclose this, because driving while impaired is 'of the nature' of a DUI. I don't know if your state if the Driving while impaired charge is a misdemeanor (it probably is, although it may be a driving violation), so your answer to the felony/misdemeanor question may also be misleading.

I don't think a DWI will get you blocked from working at the bank, but not being completely honest with your employer may. I think you have an obligation to call back and say "oh, for the record, I did plead guilty/whatever to Driving While Impaired and I would be happy to share the details if it's of interest to the bank." They CAN and WILL check your criminal history background if you get an inteview (you usually have to sign a form.)
So be honest, I think you'll be OK.

It will show up on a background check. If you gloss over it like it is not there and then they find it, you won't be called back. Better to just be open and honest and give the details. DUI is a misdemeanor. I would say "I don't have a felony, but there is a misdemeanor 'driving while impaired' on there". I would not discuss it on the phone, but say "I can provide you more detail when we meet in person."

i think banks order background checks on all of their employees...it would be stupid for them not to. this will be in your background check and they will know that you were hiding it. but maybe they will hire you anyway. maybe they have nobody better applying for th job. i was found guilty of underage possession of alcohol and got a job with the government after admitting to the charge from the get-go. i think it is more honest to go ahead and tell them before they get the background check back. becasue they will find out anyway and being dishonest is not what they are going to want from their employees who are handling their money.

All potential employers have access to your criminal and arrest records. I believe you are unsuccessful in your employment quest because you lied about it. Banks and other employers need and look for HONEST people to hire. YOU LIED, plain and simple. The background check will reveal the lies.

i guess it would depend on a lot of variables. i have a dui with similar circumstance, answered no like you did, and was not questioned when applying for a student line of credit. im not sure if this would vary with other types of loans, but in my experience they didn't my bank was CIBC, and i figure it may vary but its likely it doesnt because they all fall under fedral legislation. i'm not recommeneding you try saying no, but i hope my testimony will help

All banks will do a full criminal background check on you, along with a drug test. If it's on your records, chances are they'll see it.

WOW! What next, corporate America sleeping with you? When was the last time you had sex? Would you have to submit to a cavity search?
I think I'd be inclined to find another occupation if that's what's on the menu!
