The Germanic tribes that rose to power are responsible for the dark ages. Once the western Holy Roman empire fell the glue that held Europe together was destroyed. When Rome conquered a new people they were assimilated into Roman society as citizens. They could enter the legions, work on public projects ect.. Rome brought schools , engineers, and common law to places that were backward and made roads , sanitation and modern civilization . When Rome fell the basic services fell into disrepair. Education was abandoned as no new teachers were trained, the only ones who could read and write were in the Church. The whole of society reggressed to what was there before Rome ruled..
