Trying to eradicate AIDS in Africa?
For as long as the Pope doesn't allow condoms many Africans won't entertain the idea of using a condom. And even then it would probably an assault on the average African male ego to put a bit of plastic over their manhood.

It was the 'Red' campaign that got me wondering. Your thoughts?

"They" are fighting a losing battle everywhere to prevent the spread of Aids. Even in the U.S. and Europe where people have had it pounded into their brains over and over to use some sort of protection the infection rate ain't goin down.

I do not think that they will ever completely eradicate AIDS in Africa, but great strides are being made in countries that are now using anti-retrovirals and public education programmes. Uganda and Kenya in particular are doing very well, but poorer countries, like Malawi and Zimbabwe for instance, that cannot afford huge public health and education programmes, are slowly sinking as their death tolls rise. As worrying as the situation is in Africa it is getting just as bad in western countries, as a new generation becomes sexually active at an earlier age with little noticeable Governmental advertising about safe sex etc.

The INDEPENDENT explains this issue to perfection
Most of knew, however, that those big vompanies like Gap, Motorola etc spend MORE on their own advertising than they collect for AIDS>

Using that as an argument COCO COLA spends $100 million a year on advertising. Wouldmn't it be great if they announced that they were NOT going to advertise at all for ONE YEAR and give the $100 million to aids !

Ready for the question?

Would Coca Cola sales INCREASE OR DROP if they chose this humanitarian course of action?

I agree with your points, it would be a disaster if one of the potentially major diseases took a grip in Africa, with compromised immunity it is a prefect ground for this new and deadly strain of TB to spread further and faster or for bird flu to jump the species barrier. I think it more realistic to hope for a vaccine to HIV than for mankind to start thinking about our relationship to each other and to the earth rather than hide behind antiquated ideas. (Incidentally the Catholic Church updated the rites for exorcism in (I believe) 1999, so thats up to date...) But then theres the pharmaceutical companies trying to rake in profits... where has the sanity gone, where is the law that says drugs can only be sold at a profit for 5 years to fund future research and after that the drugs are there for the benefit of mankind? Mad world

Being Catholic is more than not being allowed to use birth control. If people choose to have unprotected sex with multiple partners outside marriage then I don't think I would categories them as being Catholic.
I do believe the Catholic birth control restriction is responsible for poverty in many parts of the world .
I think that the problems in Africa are made worse by their local ancient tribal believes in hocus pocus bush medicine.

Shared needles also spreads aids.

Well we thought we had beaten Malaria in the past and TB but we have been proved wrong so maybe your right. We should still go down fighting.
