Pop the hood. Look at the engine. If the car is fairly new, model '94 and above, you should see this large piece of plastic on top. The filter takes in air from the side or front of the car so look for some sort of plastic or rubber tube. and follow it. Should come to a large plastic square or round thing. This should be the housing for the air filter. See if there are metal clips on the sides. Simply remove pull on all the clips and lift the cover. Voila! The filter is inside.

i own a repair shop, and it isn't a dumb question at all if your car is fuel injection it will have a tube running from the engine a large one,and you can follow it to a box,,and there will be clips on it,once you remove them you lift up ,and the air filter will be in there, next time if you,ll say exactly what type car you have i can tell you exactly where it is,all i can do this time is guess,we have to know what type car you own so we can help you ,and i may be wrong on this one,but i don't know what you actually drive, good luck i hope this helps.

If you have an older car (80s etc.) look in the engine, right under the big black round barrel sitting in the middle. Unscrew the wing nut and there she sits. If newer, it's usually on the passengers side fenderwell and you'll have to unscrew a few screws and pull the square filter out. If you don't want to do it, just go to an auto parts store they will do it for you. good luck.

In a car ? Clipped in triangular box on top of the motor.

An air conditioner ? In the front of the unit where the air is sucked back in.

In the vents, behind the opening.

An old car with a carb ? On top of it : unscrew the round cover.

It's in a different spot in every car, but it's usually the largest single plastic "box" under the hood, and there are usually some clips that hold it in place -- which you can remove.
