I was walking yesterday and all of the sudden a big skunk comes running accross the street and it stopped abrubtly when it saw me...it hunched its back and stuck its tail straight up...
after freezing for a minute i turned and walked in the other direction...but what is the best thing to do? walk the other way? just keep going the way you were going? stand still?

A skunk will only spray as a last resort. As a rule, they won't bother you if just leave them alone. There's a lot of skunks where I live and I see them all the time. They pretty much just ignore me if I just go about my own business. You did the right thing by walking the other way.

I would say stand still until it leaves because they will only spray you if they feel threatened. Now on the other hand, if it keeps coming towards you I would just run in the opposite direction.

this actually happened to me! I just froze in my tracks, and he passed by (walking over the top of my feet!) without at all being agitated or alerted...
