Yes
You will also need to fill out an FMT at the border as a Tourist. This costs about 20-40 dollars. You will also have to pay a permission for the car for so many days. As long as the car gets out of Mexico before this you are ok. When traveling to Mexico bring your birth certiifcate and any other documents you may need with an apostles seal. The goverment does not like to believe anything. Make sure you have access to money as it is not a good idea to have a lot of cash on you. Travelers checks are welcome in some places that a tourst would visit or in the bank. Mexico is not the easiest country to enter any more. It is Beautiful. Come to Michoacan or Colima .

The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative will require all U.S. citizens, Canadians, citizens of the British Overseas Territory of Bermuda, and citizens of Mexico to have a passport or other accepted secure document to enter or re-enter United States with a car by January 1, 2008. The goal is to strengthen border security and facilitate entry into the United States for U.S. citizens and legitimate foreign visitors.

Not 'till '08. I suggest that you put in your application for a passport, as the backlog is getting worse.
