Thank you for most of the advice. To "H", you tell me I should be ashamed of myself. This girl has a room in my home, I take her to the doctors, I kiss her boo boo's, I go to her school functions, I am her "mother" in every sense of the word. Her biological mother gave birth to her...that's all. I was feeling bad because she felt bad not having any of our last names. So I am not ashamed of myself. You should be ashamed passing judgement on someone.I'll keep you in my prayers "H", that no one is as fast to judge you.

I read the last question and think H has misjudged you, but I do agree that her last name doesnt matter. I know your niece feels bad, but it is up to YOU to teach her that it just doesnt matter. Teach her not to worry about what other kids, teachers, parents think about her (if she is feeling left out or teased). Let her know your love for her and her love for you is the only thing that matters. I agree with the person who said she should make the decision about her own name when she is older. Kudos for taking care of your niece when her mom is such a bum.

tell her you have faith she is clever adequate and grown up adequate to act properly. childrens commonly not sleep (or down) to the expectancies that adults positioned previously them. do no longer promise rewards because of the fact she could desire to be performing properly at age 8. study a e book mutually or play a sport of tic-tac-toe etc so she maintains to be busy with acceptable waiting room habit. you're a good aunt for helping out!!!
