yes, all secure servers start with https and have an icon: lock somewhere, varies with the browser.

Is your wireless router "security-enabled"? My wireless router is set with WPA encryption, and I generally feel that's safe enough for my needs.
If you're concerned about your wireless security, turn off your wireless card and plug your laptop directly into your router during the times when you want to make online purchases. It's the only 100% sure way that your wireless packets aren't being sniffed out.

The "secure server" is the OTHER end of the connection. It has nothing to do with whether or not your connection is wireless or not. The secure server will encrypt your information and the certificate authority (Verisign, Thawte, etc) will verify that the other end of the connection is, in fact, who they say they are.

Doesn't matter whether you're wireless or hard-wired, as long as your wireless connection is secured. It is, isn't it?
The server in question is at the other end, not yours, as someone has already said.

Download j-wire stoplock - it costs but it's the best wireless security available. If you want a free program, you can try airsnare - This won't stop anyone hacking your system, but it notifies you if it detects another mac address logging on to your network.
J-wire will encrypt the information you are sending, so your card details are not sniffed out on their way to the destination - they do have a free trial available on the website http://www.jwire.com

your laptop one wireless has nothing to do w/ what the destination website is using for encryption. You dont supply the encryption the remote website does. If you goto say paypal.com etc..and put in credit card information, it does not matter what medium you are accessing https://www.paypal.com on, since that is the secure channel...

To answer your question, yes, pages that are secure (lock icon, SSL) will still be safe over WiFi.
If you want all of your web browsing to be secure you can use either of these free programs:
AnchorFree Hotspot Sheild

iOpus iPig

Best practice, install WPA-PSK as your encryption between your laptop and your router.
