I have a 256MB RAM on my PC and I want to upgrade it to 1GB and the technician says after adding the new RAM, I'll have to re-install everything on my computer including Windows. Is this true??. He says if this is not done, the new RAM won't make the PC as fast.

It's not true, but you have to research how much memory your motherboard accepts, I had a PC with 256MB that wouldn't accept more than 386MB (I had bought 512MB and I had to return it). Clearing your computer generally gets rid of un-needed software, so it'll make it faster anyway, but it won't make a huge difference and you don't specifically need it when you're adding memory. You should only let him format it if he can backup and restore all your personal data and if your PC is really bad on spyware and useless programs. :P

All motherboards have a limit to what they can read and a lot of older ones won't recognise a lot of memory. If you can open your PC and read the model lable (nVidia, Intel, Via, or SiS), then look it up online in the company's site. It will give you how much and WHAT KIND of memory you need and can use. Watch out not to buy the wrong kind because it can damage your PC.

I just added more Ram to mine and I did not have to remove or reinstall anything. The computer took care of everything. The only thing you have to do is make sure you do not have anything hooked up to your tower. Unplug everything. then when the new Ram is in place. Hook everything back up and plug the power cord in. Your computer will find every thing and take it from there. You may have to start your computer a couple of time but your screen will get the little box to tell you when and why.Just keep following instructions that flash on the screen. This could take a while, but the wait is well worth it. So go for it. I am a 63yr old lady and if I can do it anyone can do it. Just move the end clamps open, slide the Ram in place, gently, and listen for the click, put the side back on. then plug everything in, leaving the power cord for last. Turn it on and watch what happens. It won't matter to your computer if things are plugged in differently than they were before, your computer will find them as long as the plug is for the right size intake. Good Luck. Buy the way it will run faster.
