At 50 years old it is certainly animal glue which was applied hot, and the best way to unglue it is by applying hot wet cloths and that will definitely work. They can be reglued by various glues on the market, but if the are a slack fitting PVA glue would not do as you need a gap filling glue, I would be inclined to use the same type of glue as the original, if you use a glue that is unsuitable it will be difficult to remove it and would make further attempts difficult, and future in attemps the glue would not penetrate, animal glue is still available and is sometimes called Scotch glue, it is put in a tin can with a little water and heated until it melts and applied with a brush, professional restorers still use this glue.

Creaking joint means loose and ready to disassemble, so look for a steel pin in those joints and remove that with a needle nose pliers. On the tight ones, that is animal hoof glue, which when heated melts. So id try a hot air gun on that to loosen it up.

Reglue with modern polyethylene caulk tube adhesive, that will swell, fill the gaps and can easily be trimmed neatly around with a razor blade, so dont smear it when it bubbles out, let it harden and trim.
