you need to be more specific. besides if you and your friends idea of fun is meeting in detroit for the first time better be careful. i live and work here. there are tons of funs safe things to do but you can also get in a lot of trouble. check out the Metrotimes: http://www.metrotimes.com/

Go to the Metro Time's web site and you can see what bands are playing and where.
Not knowing what "scene" you are into, there are all types of bars and clubs around the city of Detroit.

Check out Royal Oak for hip bars/clubs, restaurants and shopping. Downtown bars/clubs are really top notch now but Royal Oak is still best because everything is clustered together and you can walk the area.

Chicago....Royal Oak is lame, but thats where the poseurs hang out at...if you have ever been to chicago, new york, LA, miami, hell even austin....detroit is a let down for hipsters.

the magic stick. it's like a bar downstairs with a bowling alley and upstairs is a bar and sometimes they have live music or djs.
