If it's still under copyright, you can't find a legal free copy. Authors have the right to be paid for their work and, for most of us, it's the only paycheck we get. When people go looking for pirated copies, the author doesn't get paid. In some cases, the author soon decides that writing is not a good way to support a family and they turn to another career. If you value an author's work and want them to keep writing, buy their books.

Try the Digital Book Index (Note: they mix free and not-free ebooks) http://www.digitalbookindex.org/search001a.htm

Project Gutenberg stocks (figuratively) reams upon reams of public domain books - http://www.gutenberg.org

Public Domain eBooks has the same idea - http://www.pos1.info/

Try the Eserver also at http://www.eserver.org

The Online Books Page is another literary leviathan online at http://onlinebooks.library.upenn.edu/

Wikisource at http://www.wikisource.org might have it, since it's user-submitted I believe.

And finally, the University of Texas has a page of similar sites at http://www.lib.utexas.edu/books/etext.html

Oh yes - the sites I listed above are legal. The authors are already either deceased for the prerequisite length of time, or have given permission for the books' use. So, no worries there.

I hope you find what you wanted!

Many public libraries purchase rights to ebooks, and you check out those rights with our card. The books appear in the catalog, so you might try your local public library.
