So, I loaned a very close friend $400 over Christmas and she still hasn't paid me back. I'm sure she's just forgotten, but how do I remind her without sounding like a jerk?

Perhaps you could drop it into a conversation, you could even say:
"I don't mean to sound rude, but do you have an estimate time of when you could pay me back.. the $400 over christmas I mean? It's just that I'm a bit short of cash. I don't mean to pressure you"

Or something along those lines. Just keep your tone of voice light. And smile.

If you know that she is not still financially strapped, it would be best to just ask in a straight forward way. If she is spending money on frivilous things that are not necessary, you may want to drop a "reminder" that she still owes you money and you will be needing it back. This would also be the time to make arrangements to pay it back on a set payment plan if she can't give it all to you at the time. If she is truly a friend, she will not take it badly. After all, you did her a favor with the original loan and it has been 3 months.

I've been in that situation before. I actually confided in someone else and THAT person told my friend that it wasn't right. I felt foolish, even though I shouldn't have. Other times I've found that you just say, oh, I hope you're not trying to pay me back all at once...that would be too much for you to lay out at once and I wouldn't want you to strap yourself, so if you want, why not make small payments weekly or monthly? It may work, but it may be that you have to do something each time to get more money back. OR...say something is coming up that you need to do and you don't have the money for it, so do you think you'll be paid back by that time. Kind of make it seem that you're looking to make it easier on your friend.

does she have it?

is she working?

if so then a gentle reminder like I loaned you $400 at xmass and was wondering if or when you could pay me back

then maybe get $50 a month or something

if she doesn't have it don't ask

freindships are worth more than $400 usually.

also, don't loan money if you can't spare it, maybe give $30 instead of loaning $400 next time, whoever it is

Just politely ask her she can't get upset because she did borrow the money from you in the first place, if she does get upset that tells you she is not your friend, a true friend would not get upset at a friend that was just trying to help them out

Be direct with her but keep your tone polite and in civilized manner. One day call her "Hey, I was wondering if you still going to pay me back from x-mas....I would like to use it for something ...please let me know a time frame when i should expect it back because I'm planning for .....(insert situation)...."

its very hard just try to "remind" her as nice as possible saying that if she can't afford to pay it all back at once perhaps she could give you some each week----- i doubt she has forgotton though ---she's just hoping that you have!
