A PhD is a doctorate.

Look for the letters.

AA is Associates degree

BA or BS are bachelor degrees (look for the B)

MBA, MS, etc are masters degrees (look for the M)

MD, JD, PhD, etc are doctorate degrees (look for the D)

The hierarchy, starting from the lowest to the highest, is:

AA: assoc. arts degree (typically 2 years of college)
BA/S: bachelor arts/science degree (4 or 5 years of college)
MA/S: master arts/science degree (2 or 3 years after BA/S)
PhD: doctorate degree (2 or 3 years, plus dissertation, after MA/S)

PhD = Doctor of Philosophy, but this is misleading because most PhDs have nothing to do with philosophy at all. Mine, for example, is a PhD in Business Administration. All legitimate PhDs require writing a dissertation in addition to a comprehensive exam and lots of course work.

A PhD is a doctorate, and either requires several more years of study beyond a Master's degree.

No, it's not the same thing, and yes a doctorate is the same as a PhD. You must go to school for another two or four years to get your doctorate.
