The origin of this term goes back a long way.

Jesus says and John quotes him in the New Testement...

John 15:5 I am the vine, you are the branches.

The grapevine is the network of people that hear and spread the office/city gossip. It's not real, more of an analogy

They refer to the grapevine as in being 'person to person' within their social outlet' passed on so to speak - may I add this is a fantastic song or was in the day of first release.

I would imagine beacuse gossip runs quickly and everywhere as a grapevines grow quickley and covers everything.

Ha ha, I'd always assumed it was because the fine ringlet-shaped tendrils that vines grow to grip onto things resembled the old-fashioned curled cable of a telephone!

Maybe not...

I don't know probably 'cause it grows fast. I would like to point out this is not a good song. If I heard that the person I loved and trusted was cheating on me then I'd speak to them about it not listen to gossips!!!!!
