Is it an unwritten rule that we must care about our family more than we do our friends?

Under more or less normal circumstances, that is. It would be interesting to discuss this topic for victims of child abuse/neglect, etc., but that isn't my main question.

No there is no rule. Most people have a friend that is closer to them than a brother or sister or mother. You heart tells you if you care more for some then others and only you know why. Take care Heather

Absolutely not! Written or unwritten, we don't HAVE to care about our family more than our friends. Of course, the circumstances have much to do with why we feel one way or another. For me personally, I would turn to my friends much quicker than I would my family - that's just the way it is. When we are growing up our family is important to us - however, when we become adults we realize that sometimes we are all very different and may not like, trust, want to confide in our families for all sorts of reasons. Our family is quicker to judge us than our friends.

My immediate fam always comes first, then friends, then my mom etc. I did cut the apron strings, but if she would need me, she would come 1st, after my kids.

People are people. It doesn't matter if you're related. Sometimes friends make for much better family.

I think it is, but my motto is "We can't choose our family, we're stuck with them, doesn't mean we have to like them".
