how is a nuclear reactor similar to a convetional fossil fuel power plant are there any differences between the two

They both are generally located near a body of water to use for cooling. Both produce waste products. Coal fired produces ash as well as CO2 and steam. A nuclear plant has radioactive waste to get rid of. It lets steam out, not radioactive. Both use the heat produced to make steam to turn the generator. Nuclear requires shielding from the fuel rods, and a material for the moderator to slow the neutrons used for the fission and control rods to absorb neutrons to control the nuclear reaction.

They are similar because -:
i) They will both run out one day (as they are finite in amount)
ii) The reactions they use are both made to heat water and create super-heated steam which in turn drives a turbine to produce electricity.

They are different because-:
i) Nuclear Power uses fission (the splitting of an atom) to generate the heat
ii) Nuclear Power gives off radiation (such as alpha's, beta's and gamma's)
iii) Less fuel is required in a nuclear reactor to generate the same amount of energy
iv) Nuclear power does not give off sulphurous and carbonous emissions

And also many many more reasons for similarities and differences.

They both heat steam to turn a turbine, and thus generate power. The heat source in a fossil fuel station is chemical combustion, while in a nuclear station it is the much more efficient 'nuclear fission'

Both produce power with steam turbines.

One produces the steam by burning fossil fuel and the other by a controlled nuclear reaction.
