Stop. Do Not Listen to what others say. Focus here:

#1.
If people say install and run a spyware (program) they are completely out of their minds.

You know what a spyware program is? Actually, it is what its name suggests (or means). It's a SPYWARE. A program that spies on your computer. A malicious program that some versions has the capability of recording all your key strokes - such that when you are entering your password - it will be recorded and electronically sent to the people who control (or make) the spyware.

***I think the correct way to say this is install and run an anti-spyware program.***

#2.
If people say install and run an adware (program) they are completely nuts.

You know what an adware is? Actually, it is what its name suggests (or means). It is an ADWARE. A program that pretends to run an ad (advertisement) but in the background it is trying to gather all the information on your PC... and sending the info to the people with malicious intent.

***I think the correct way to say this is install and run an anti-adware program***

#3.
Run Scandisk (This is the sector repair utility of Windows). On Windows Explorer, right-click on your main hard drive (e.g. C:) and select properties. Click Tools tab and click the Check Now button. Follow easy instructions and prompts.

#4.
If #1, #2, and #3 (above) does not work:
Gather all your recovery CD's that came with the PC. Read the procedure on how to use the recovery CD's to restore your PC back to its original (manufacturer's) state.

Cheers!

I had/have this problem; there can be a few sources of why your computer is running so slow:
1) Viruses/Ad-Ware; there is a good chance you just have a ton of stuff running shadow programs and eating up your memory. Download AVG Virus for free and run a full scan.
2) Errors; you could have a ton of errors in your programs that is making things go slow. I've purchased Registry Mechanic and it has sped things up a little bit.
3) Too many processes; go to your Task Manager and look to see how many processes you are running. If it looks high (80+) you might want to stop them. Go to a "Process Library" online and look up everyone that is running or sounds shady.
4) Old computer; maybe its time to buy a new one.

Try this, start, all programs, accessories, system tools disk defrag, if there is still no improvment, then I would suspect you are infected with spyware and virus's.

To lo learn how to reformat your computer correctly go to this site and someone will walk you through it and help work out the partion space thing.

You could format the hard drive using your system disk and reinstall windows.this would completely wipe the hard drive so back up any information ie Photos documents ect. that you don't want to lose .if you have or will be running xp you could use windows files and settings transfer wizard even if you install a new hard drive ,the age of the system ,would be a factor as the older the system the more money the upgrades would cost. also memory ,check your systems memory that is the best upgrade bang for your buck as far as system speed but space will require hard drive reformating or replacement Is your anti virus database up to date . have you checked for viruses and spy ware .but ultimately a new PC is probably your best bet as I have a feeling you have had this one around for a while.Goodluck

Speed up your PC This Way

Firstly go to start menu and select "run"

In the dialog that comes up type msconfig

On the next screen select the startup tab and choose disable all - apply it then restart your PC - this disables all the tat that starts up when your PC starts - dont worry if anything has to start when your pc reboots it will automatically re-enable it's self

now go to control panels and select internet options - and delete temporary internet files (Including Offline content)

Remove the appallingly bad Norton and/or mcaffe - spybot S&D / Adaware and any other virus or spyware checker on your PC (Start > Control panels > Add remove programs) then after they are all removed

Download AVG Free & AVGS Free from

http://free.grisoft.com/freeweb.php/doc/2/

run both of these programs and clear any viruses / spyware you may have

after that - run the disk defragmenter Programs > System tools

Make sure windows firewall is enabled - But dont download any other firewalls as this on does it's job fine and you dont need 2 (This will only cause you more problems)

Good luck

Hope this helps

you definitely have to much files in your hard drive. try to burn some in a CD or DVD. Uninstall programs you never use. Download some ad ware and spy ware remover.

I still use spybot and adware (by lavasoft) to clean my hardrive. it may not get rid all of the spyware, but it definitely removes some unwanted program

i also used AVG antivirus, the free edition, it helps to remover virus programs that can slow down your computer.

i was going to ask if you think you may have mailicous software on your computer but you didn't complain of any pop ups or anything. that software will slow ya down too. but in addition to your disk clean up run, unistall any unnecessary programs, delete cookies, history and temp internet files (all three in tools>internet options), ctrl-alt-dtl and go to process and end any FAMILIAR processes that you aren't using. i wouldn't mess with any of the processes under the username system. and definately don't end "explorer." any of the desktop icons that you don't really need, cram them all into one folder. a cluttered desktop can slow your computer down too. don't know how much that'll help, but they're a few ideas

just to make sure you don't have any viruses or anything. run a scan here.

Well all i can say is you're going to need a computer expert with deep knowledge of how the circuit board works inside the modem. me? im not into networking, im more of the guy who MAKES and MANIPULATES the programs, i dont fully understand 100% what goes on inside though. from the sounds of it ull just need to take out ur hard drive physically and buy a new one. wal mart sells them pretty cheap. downside: u loose everything u had.

sounds to me like u either shut down ur comp the wrong way by switching the modem off w/o hitting shut down, or you got a virus and its infecting ur hard drive.

hope that helps
