Looking back at the 80's and early 90's, ALL music sucks now. Actually, the old stuff was all about love and hair and sex, with a a little bit of random screaming and lots of pointless (yet entertaining) music videos, but that's what made it so cool. Today's music is about generically angsty nothingness. And it's not just rock and metal. All of the other genres of music were better back then. I think music pretty much died sometime around 1996.

So little originality these days. I'm an almost 40 yr. old, but I can find good groups these days. If you know anything about music (which I do...it's my profession), you can tell that most of these groups tend to copy someone else. A lot of the singers voices sound the same. But, there is talent out there...you just have to search for it. In the 80's and early 90's, there were so many original artists (Prince, U2, GNR, Nirvana, Metallica, and so on), but you don't see a wide variety of style of rock...just a lot of copycats.

I agree that todays rock is poor the bands you mention were about having a good time while todays bands are negative and sing about drivel. There are a lot of good new bands coming through tho they are just more underground which is cool anyway. Check out The Horrors , Dogs or Towers Of London they all rock or things like The Subways there is a lot out there. I changed my mind todays music is better its just that there is pop rock rather than just pop the reason for my change of view I prefer McFly to Jason Donovan and I remember when there was no Rock on the radio at all.

You have some validity. The 80's is my era of choice for Metal or Hard Rock. But it has evolved in to a new sound as it has from the 70's to the 80's. It's still enjoyable!!!
I don't want it back to the way it was. That era had it's time and place and it's still great to crank up some of the classic 80's tunes in the car stereo. But the new bands are fighting for respect and their place in time.

I say the same except...the 70s & 60s rocked. The 60s & 70s *established* the way rock became by the 80s & 90s.

There is always a tendency to favour the music of our youth and regard it as the best ever. To get a good perspective on the relative merits of todays rock as opposed to the rock of the eighties you really need the opinion of someone who was out of that time zone. I was brought up with music in the late sixties and early seventies and I am similarly loyal to the sounds of my youth, because it is not only the music, but the memories associated with it. (Do you seriously think that Angus compares to Jimi Hendrix ?)
As far as carefully sculpted hair-dos etc., I've always thought that those in the rock scene look like a big bunch of Fairies.

For the most part, I agree. There are a few bright spots in today's music, but for the most part, it sucks. Especially the "punk rock" of today, which is mostly commercialized garbage. I started listening to Industrial music in the 90's, and that is pretty much the only new music I care for.

right on brother! there is nothing out right now that interests me in the least. i don't even bother watching music videos. i was watching fuse a couple fridays ago, and i didn't know what was going on. bunch of crap. at least if there was some slipnot or tool or something, i could stomach it. all american rejects is trash. everything is all nasal now and it makes me sick. about the only show i want to check out is tool, and that's on hold because of an injury. like you said, what happened to the groups back then, i went to just about every show and rarely disappointed.
motley crue, dokken, judas priest, ronny james dio, rainbow, cheap trick, def leppard, metallica, scorpions, van halen, anthrax, slayer, loudness, sod, mod, king diamond, ac/dc, rush, krokus, queensryche, pantera. granted, most of these band are defunct or possible not even heard of nowadays, but it used to be a blast to go to these shows and thrash!!! now it's a bunch of lame-o noise that i wouldn't try to fake rocking out to these fools.

I am well into dance music. I used to love rock though but lately it has gotten weird and rock seems to have split itself from all other genres. Rock is now a big disapointment a is only listened to by weird people and goths.

i dont have the same issues you do, gosh, im only nearly 19, but! i am becomming tiresome of rock. ive been listening to XFM and watching MTV2 instead. the rock world's loosing me. I still like all the same rock, metal punk bands as before but i am getting so bored. they use all the pretty ones and dont give us any good/ strange music. which is why im getting into indie. they use all sorts of instruments, sing about anything. its lovely. funny dancing. much less pensive and samey.
