i have been watching family guy for a couple of years now, i could even quote from it. i think i have seen almost all the episodes but i am still very confused... do they understand stewie or not. in the beginning episodes it seems like they do but then again how could they? they was an episode which asked this very same question but didnt give an answer. what the hell?

It's supposed to be an open ended question. This is a rare case where leaving a vague anwer to a complex question gives us more clarity than recieving an answer would. If we knew that they could understand Stewie, then his character would be less unique, if we knew they couldn't, then we'd wonder why he talks in the first palce. The fact that Brian, another character who shouldn't b able to talk but can, is the only one who understand Stewie is also very telling. Stewie and Brian exist in a world of their own, one that exists outside the boarders of our logic. This adds a fantasy aspect to the show which makes even more enjoyable

Seth McFarland was on Love Line last week and someone asked the same question . He danced around the question as well. It is suppose to be an on going guessing game for the viewers as well. We all know Brian can understand him, but then again he is a talking dog, what talking dogs can't understand literate babies? duh!

I don't think the adults do, but Brian understands him. They have had conversations.

i was wondering the same thing myself. i think that normally only brian can understand him, but from time to time they kinda ignore this rule.....hell, it's family guy, we can't expect them to obbey any rule.
