First of all, pay someone. This current government--both sides of the aisle--caters only to those who will pay for their retirement. If you can't do that, then you'd be better be ready to net them hundreds of thousands of votes somehow, since we know that they will only do something if it's going to result in another vicotry for them or for their side.
Second of all, rethink your stance. Yes, smoking stinks, it's deadly and can kill even those who don't smoke (supposedly), however, once you grant the power t ban something like smoking, a "guilty pleasure", you're opening the door for them to do more of the same. What's next? Alcohol? Gambling? Guns? Fatty foods? Sledding? I mean...everything out there is capabnle of killing you, so where the distiction that makes smoking more important than anything else?

You should contact your local U.S. congressperson and see if you can convince them to introduce legislation banning tobacco. If they do, Congress would vote on it. If it passed both houses, then it would be presented to the president for signature. Then it would be a law.
Good luck with that though - Big Tobacco is rich and likes to give money away to keep this very thing from happening.

First, you have to get the representatives to stop taking money from tobacco lobbyists. Then, you have to convince Congress that tobacco is such a horrible drug, it should be added to the CSA of 1970, thereby banning it.
It won't happen, though. Prohibition never EVER works. Haven't you heard of the 1920s? Haven't you heard of the "War on Drugs"?

While you are at it why not ban soft drinks and fast food for making people overweight, alcohol, prescription drugs that addict people. Oh and lets not forget! Illegal drugs are already out there and the government is having a hard enough time controlling that. Lets add tobacco to the list so our police can have even more illegal substances to control. Enough of Big Brother already.

Well, you'll have to kill me and a lot of my friends and clients before you'll ever come close. Do you realize how much of the taxes that we pay on cigarettes goes to education and science? Do you really think you're going to get the whole country to agree with you? You'll pay hell first. Why don't you start with the tobacco growers and make them stop growing the tobacco? Ohhhhh, that's right, Al Gore's family got rich from growing tobacco. I guess that keeps you from going that route.

Like anything else, you write your Congressman and ask them to sponsor the bill.
But it's not going to happen. Tobacco is too engrained in society, and the lobby is too strong politically and money-wise, for tobacco to be declared an illegal drug.
And nothing less than declaring it an illegal drug (regulating or forbidding its sale) is really within the range of Congressional enumerated powers under the Commerce Clause (smoking itself is not a commercial activity).

Don't waste your time. Tobacco is big, big money. If they didn't ban tobacco after the cigarette companies had to admit they are deliberately killing the population, they are never going to.

You would have to start with a petition......However, they will never ban tobacco....that would be like banning free money , and LOTS of it.

I don't think they should. Nor do I think they could. Tobacco is Mega Big Bucks, and congressmen are owned by money, no matter which party they have painted on their banner.
