Like everyone else says, ask.
But, take the time to listen. You will get clues... how does CL talk about men? How does CL talk about women? You can also bring up woman specific things to gauge a response.
Whether CL is a man or woman, you are basically trying to find out if he/she is gay or straight. One way for a soft approach is to find out CL's tolerance for homosexuals before asking "are you into women?" So, for example, if CL is a woman, you could ask something like... "A lesbian couple I know invited me to the art museum this weekend. I know you've wanted to go - would you be comfortable hanging out with them?" Or something more direct, "Would you be comfortable living with a lesbian roommate?"
Eventually you will have to ask CL directly if he/she is into women, but the question doesn't have to come out of nowhere.

Just ask and make sure it's in a friendly manner. If you find out yes, still be a friend. As a matter of fact you need to be more of a friend if she reveals something like that to you. If you're not into to girls let her know and you wont have to worry about anything. Plus, if she don't completely trust you'll never know the truth. A person can be very protective of this type of secret. You have to promise not to tell anyone about this and stand by your promise and you would be a terrible friend if you did'nt. If she's not, apologize and do the same and continue to be friends. It may be better if you write her a letter if you can't do it face to face.

It is more important for you to know if you are into women! With this knowledge, you can state to your friend how you feel about the subject. She will react accordingly, you will no longer be in doubt.
