The oily brown sludge is typical of a head gasket, I'm afraid. You may need the head skimming as well (a good garage will check this as a matter of course).
Water pumps usually give notice by a trickle of water coming either from a piddle hole underneath the pump or around the shaft - indeed that may have been the start of your problems, leading to overheating & gasket failure.
You don't stand a chance with the selling garage, not without a warranty.
Good Luck!

If your radiator is sludging up it's a head gasket. If it was the pump the car would be dry of water as it would boil over. You have no rights against the seller I'm afraid.

while the engine is chilly and not working, carry close the pulley or fan on the tip of the coolant pump and sense if there is any play, there must be no detectable stream. you additionally can get rid of the belt and the fan or pulley ought to spin rather freely [ a young impedence led to by making use of the impeller spinning in fluid, is all that would desire to be felt ]. no count if that's a worn pump [ which it sounds like ], it in all probability will quickly start to leak from the" weep hollow ".

whatever happened to cause the over heat doesn't really matter at this stage, cause u are most lightly looking at a buklkle in the head at worst and at least a set of head gaskets and a skim of the head. sorry big money .... and you have no come back with the dealer neither, good luck brian.

Sounds like the heat gasket has gone as you say there was overheating and oil brown sludge.

water pumps usually leak or make noise when they go out but with oil in the water and you over heated it you mast likely blew the head gasket or cracked or warped the head

Water pump has a weep hole that usually tattles if it is going bad. If the car ran dry, put some water in it & find out if it is leaking, then update us.

Anytime you overheat (run dry) a vehicle with an aluminum head...you can almost guarantee that you'll be replacing the head. At the very least you'll be shaving it down to get a flat surface again.

Not wishing bad luck on you, but once you have "cooked" an engine, you can expect a lot more than the replacement of a waterpump, ie gaskets. cylinder scoring ect, wish you luck
