Take a set of identical twins. Same genetic make-up. Now, within their first two weeks of life, they have been exposed to basically the exact same environment.

So the two factors: genes and environment up to that point are identical.

Why is one of them cranky and always cries and the other one just sleeps and hardly ever cries?

Must there not be a third factor, besides genes and environment, that causes these clearly distinct behaviors??

I think that's an interesting question, and I have actually wondered the same before.

After doing some thinking, I figured that even though their overall genetic blueprint is identical, they do not have the exact same genes "turned on." This causes the difference in personality, even though there are still many similarities in their personalities, since they share the same genetic pool from which they get their traits.

Genes in each individual are turned on and off randomly inside the womb, so even though they carry the same overall genetic make-up, they are not technically the same.

Their enviroment's have not been identical up to this point and genetic mutations account for slight differences in neurone structure and arrangement which could cause a difference in personality, there does not need to be another factor involved.

Developmental factors in the womb; the " silent " contributor. Even identical twins, in the same chlorin, have nutritional differences and the like.

They are different people and have different amounts of serotonin (the chemical in our brain that makes us happy) and melatonin (the chemical in our brain that makes us sleepy, there's a bunch of that in turkey) along with a boatload of other chemicals at any given time

Almost everything does. The parents, upbringing, friends, family, what you hear and read, music, locale, finance, etc.
