I love Garth Nix books, especially the Abhorsen trilogy. Who cares if they are classified as children's books? I read kid's books all time, especially fantasy ones. Read what you like. Nix is a good writer.
You might also like Gerald Morris, Philip Pullman (The His Dark Materials books especially), Sherwood Smith, Robin McKinley's Blue Sword and The Hero and The Crown.
Happy reading. P.S. I think it is the ultimate compliment for Children's Lit authors to receive, that adults like their books, too. Just because kids are young doesn't mean they should suffer mediocre writers!

Garth Nix writes a variety of books! Most of them are young adult fiction. In my opinion, Shade's Children, Sabriel, Lirael, and Abhorsen are his best novels.
