That can happen because of the hormones. The best thing to use is olive oil or lanolin as you can continue to use these while breastfeeding. Also commercial lotions tend to contain dyes, perfumes, alcohol, etc which can make things worse.
Cocoa butter is also safe BUT it has a higher possibility of being and allergen than olive oil or lanolin and should not be used during lactation. Cocoa butter is the part of chocolate that people are allergic to (well generally, with allergies there are always exceptions). Some people are also allergic to lanolin. I haven't heard of anyone being allergic to olive oil but I am sure it has happened.

This is totally normal, just like most everyone else has said. There were just a couple of things that I wanted to add that I didn't read in the other answers. First of all, try to avoid using soap on your nipples in the shower, or switch to a soap made for sensitive skin (I recommend Dove Sensitive, but there are lots of kinds). The perfumes and alcohols in soap can make this problem a lot worse. Then use a moisturizer, although be careful what kind you use. Again try to avoid anything with a scent. A couple of people have mentioned Lanolin (it comes in lots of different brands, just look in the nursing section of a Wal-mart or Target or something). It works really well, although personally I think it's kind of uncomfortable to wear. The other thing that you might want to consider is what you're washing your bras in. I had this problem really bad for awhile and came to find out that my fabric softener was really aggravating it. I switched to a different brand for my bras and haven't had trouble since. Good luck and congratulations!

I'm 29 weeks. My nipples got so dark they are practically black and got huge, almost the size of dinner plates..lol :)
They are very dry too and it can get uncomfortable. I put lotion on my breasts everyday because the nipples are so dry (I also have lots of stretch marks on my breasts). I would recommend a good, heavy lotion and put it on everyday right after the shower. It has helped me!

That's common, mine get so dry and itch sooooo bad. Try cocoa butter for now, but not after the baby's born. If you start leaking colostrum at any point then you can rub that into your nipples. Sounds kinda weird, but it's really fatty and helps tremendously. Also, don't use soap on your nipples, when you bathe, just rinse them with water and pat them dry.
good luck and congrats!

Hormones can do all kinds of strange things to your body. Later in pregnancy, you'll develop these white spots (Montgomery's glands??) that will help keep your nips lubricated.
Put some lotion on them. If it persists after the baby's born, use Lansinoh.

All has to do with hormones. My skin changed almost by the day when I was preggo. Try a little vaseline.
