I am shopping around for a new laptop. Right now I have a Compaq 2600 and I hate it! It is so slow and unreliable and overheats and crashes all the time. I use my computer for really simple things like surfing the net, doing school work, downloading music, chatting, watching movies, etc. I've heard great things about Macbooks and I like the way the look and operate, but I just don't know if they are worth the extra cash. I can get a new PC for $700. I am just scared that if I buy another PC, I'll have to go buy another new computer in 4 more years because I'll be hit with the same problems I'm having now..
I guess what I am asking is whether the Macbook will give me a longer lifespan? I am graduating from university next year and then going to do a Masters, I just want a computer that will work well all the way until I am done with school.
Thanks!

You're right about cost: a new MacBook with Intel Core can set you back $1400. For that kind of money I'd consider a Lenovo Thinkpad, arguably a better student laptop. Toshiba and Dell have laptops as good as MacBook too.

It sounds like money's a major issue though. Sony's Vaio and HP's Presario are more fast and reliable than your old gear, and you can pick them up new for $700.

Thing is, it's not just about hardware. I use both Windows XP and Mac OS X, and Apple's system is way better -- almost uncrashable and much easier to use. I can't comment on Vista yet, but I'd bet it's no better than OS X: Microsoft has always played catch-up with Apple software.

So before plunking bucks on any PC, I'd ask a couple of Apple dealers for prices on older, refurbished or used MacBooks. We're talking about your mental health, after all.

Get the macbook.
Surfing The Net: Macs have a browser designed just for them called Safari. Safari is written with tighter code meaning that it is much safer than Internet Explorer.
Doing School Work: This is a breeze with a mac. And if you'd like you can buy and edition of Microsoft Office designed for mac, wich gives you everything a PC running microsoft office would.
Downloading Music: With a mac you would use iTunes which would run faster than it does than on a PC because it is native mac and apple software.
Chatting: Mac's have a built in iSight camera which means you can video chat with anyone elese that has a mac right out of the box.
Watching Movies: Movies run extremely smooth on a mac.

IN CONCLUSION: Mac's are worth the money, and have a much longer life span than PC's and Notebook pc's. The mac will last you a very long time
