examined in place ( normal location - not removed )

VL - vastus lateralis - a muscle in the knee
architecture - used as structure

so - We looked at the knee muscle while it was still in the knee ( probably checking the function and range of motion )

It means that the VL muscle's structure was examined while it was still int eh body.
In vivo means while still in its natural location in the body. (Translated literally it means "in living"...)

So I'm guessing it was examined by some type of mri machine while in teh body.
