I think the hardest thing in life is not knowing... uncertainty about any incident makes one extremely uncomfortable: 'where is this relationship going?' or 'will I have enough money to pay for this months rent?' these sort of questions not only provoke nervousness and thought but they also disturb us emotionally.
To over come these feelings, I think one just has to keep themselves going: convincing themselves that tomorrow will be a better day and something good might come out of the situation at hand.

The hardest thing in life for me was getting over my ex. I thought I would never get over him...but 2 years later I am over him and happy. So I guess time heals all.

The hardest thing in life is death. I lost my little brother two years ago, and part of my life is missing now. I just have to keep in mind that he is in a better place.

Fear of failing. It can keep you from trying. You have to try, fail, and learn along the way to become successful. I don't care what you are talking about (as long as it isn't crazy like jumping off a cliff with no parachute).
Even in love... if you don't date, meet the wrong woman, do the wrong things, etc... you won't learn what the right woman is going to be like, and you won't learn what you need to do to keep her. Of course, without learning, you just repeat your mistakes over and over.
Take a look around: most people never realize their potential because they have a concept of their own limitations that prevents them from trying. That's fear.
And take a look at the people saying "death of a child". Sure there is grieving, and there can be feelings of guilt (failure to protect the child) depending on how the child died, but in the end there's a chance that the child may die or may not turn out to be a healthy, functional adult, and it's possible that the fear of all that will keep you from having kids (so you fail at it by not trying). Fear is always the hardest thing to overcome, and anybody who says differently isn't being honest even with themselves.

The hardest thing in life is the death of your child. It is not supposed to be this way, your child should out live you. You never over come it and at best you learn to live with it. After thirty one years I sometimes have days when I do not think of my son or his death and when he enters my thoughts I no longer beat myself up for not having him constantly on my mind.
I have been threatened for one reason or another...I always laugh at these people and tell them there is not anything they can do to hurt me. Take my house, take my car or heck sue me, I've lived through the worst and anything else pales in comparison.
