Diagnosis & Tests
Most psychiatrists sniff at the term 'nervous breakdown', considering it to be inexact, yet among the general public the term is still widely used and understood to mean snapping under extreme pressure; getting to a point in life where you can't carry on. In one study, those most likely to say they had anticipated a nervous breakdown were young, white single mothers with low incomes and no involvement with organized religion.

Hmm.. I'm young, white, low-income... but not a single mother. Guess I'm only 3/4 of the way there.
Seriously, I think anyone can have a nervous breakdown and snap under pressure, but most people bounce back pretty quickly from the pitfalls of life. We all need help sometimes, but so many have good friends to lean on when life gets too tough. Those who don't or whose friends aren't enough are more likely to need to see a psychologist/psychiatrist or even be institutionalized for a while, depending on the severity of the breakdown. If it is those single, low-income, white mothers who are most likely to snap, it is probably because they are pressured so much by their lifes and should have more help available to them.
