There has been many ups and downs.
The 30's was a glorious period in English football culminated in the 1935 victory of England 3-2 over Italy (the then world cup holders) called the battle of Highbury (as if was a very dirty game played at Highbury with 7 Arsenal Players starting for England). England didn't feel they needed to compete in the world cup until 1950 (which actually caused us to lag behind a bit as we didn't win it until 1966). Although an English team did win the first 2 cometitions that were called the first world cup, The Sir Thomas Lipton Trophy (see the link below).

Liverpool's dominance in the 70's and 80's (in Europe as well as at home) and win's for unfancied clubs like Nottingham Forest meant another period of dominance. Then the more recent resurgence (after English teams played catch up after being banned from European competition).

So its take your pick like most things there has been peaks and trough's and we are on our way up a peak.

I think it probably depends on which team you support!

For example, my boyfriend is a Liverpool supporter, and they were last at totally the top of their game during the 80s. For Leeds, it was the 70s, and ManU had a particularly good run in the early 1990s if I remember rightly!

If you're an England fan, of course, we've been rubbish since 1966, apparently.

As a non-supporter (but devoted girlfriend and therefore sometime watcher of the game), I have to say that the healthy mix of homegrown and international players we have now makes the World Cup much more interesting. I think though that the players are paid too much!

The 1960's, 1970's, 1980's, 1990's until 2000. When domination by a team finally came to an end. It's started being on it's way up 2 years ago when Jose Mourinho joined Chelsea.

I think the premiership is the best it has ever been... Yes its full of foreign players, but the games is still played in OUR way. these players have to adapt to our game not the other way round.. the day our league changes to all the European style of play it will ruin it.... i think its great having all the variety of players but its still great that it is still seen as the English style of play.....As far as the England team goes... Room for improvement!!!
