He's certainly well known but "famous" may be too strong a word for his current status.

I met Lou back in my days as a college student hanging out in the East Village with the Andy Warhol. But, to be honest, I was more a fan of the Fugs than the Velvet Underground.

Like a lot of the East Village crowd he was borderline crazy with a head bursting from creative content.

That entire era was one in which the pace of change, the falling away of accepted verities was at once exhilarating and disturbing. We all were a bit crazy I suppose.

Yes, Lou Reed is famous in the US but not as famous as he should be. He's been around forever..I remember my parents listening to him when I was young. The first album I bought myself was Mistrial then New York, which I feel is his best album (maybe because I'm a New Yorker).
Gotta go now because "there is no time" gotta go "take a walk on the wild side" with "Romeo & Juliette"..lol

Yes, he is very famous and more respected now than in his hit-making heyday. I think he is a great artist. Best of all, he grew up in Freeport, NY, 7 miles from where I grew up, making him a hometown hero to me.

We consider him to be one of rock and roll's true lengends, In fact, him and his group, the Velvet Underground, were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
