They are placed on a leave of absence if they qualify. Otherwise they receive disciplinary action, usually a written warning. Our company attendance policy indicates that excessive absenteeism for any reason is ground for disciplinary action.

What would happen would depend on the company and the circumstances, likely position and seniority as well. Also remember that no one can legally tell you what arrangements are made.

Comp time, paid time off to make up for not being to pay for overtime, is not unusual. Other alternatives are a leave of absence and temporary disability.

Also, sometimes just simple compassion. Sometimes people have serious trauma in their lives (loss of a child for instance) and a company will continue to pay them and give them benefits while they grieve, just because it is the decent thing to do. This is especially true of long term employees, they are far more valuable then a couple of weeks of pay.

No work = no pay!

Send a memo to all employees that defines the new status of anyone who cannot or will not adhere to attendance rules.
Change status to hourly and watch employee show up.
In memo, state that poor attendance and state this CLEARLY (poor attendance), will be reason for probation and dismissal.
