There are several ways of acquiring a ferret. You can find out where you local ferret recue centre is and take on an a rescue. I'm not sure where our local ferret rescue place is in Lancashire, but there is a good possibility that there may be one in one of the larger towns or perhaps Manchester. Try typing "ferret rescue lancashire" into the search engine.
You could also contact your local vet and ask them if they know of any reputable breeders. The advantage of these two sources is that they will be able to provide you with all the help and advise you need in keeping your ferret happy and healthy. If you are a first time ferret owner you will need need to do a lot of research before you get your new pet. Although ferrets make absolutely wonderful pets, they do need a lot of time and energy.

If you have kept ferrets before and know how to care for them and what to look for when buying a ferret you could consider taking on a ferret from other means. Sometimes pet shops have private adverts in their windows advertising ferret kits for sale. Alternatively you could put an add in a pet shop window offering a good home for a ferret. Finally, if you are an active member of freecycle.com you may find that your local group (if they allow rehoming pets on their site) has someone offering a good home to a ferret (as was the case with my local freecycle group recently). You could also put a "wanted" advert on the same site. You may find that your local pet shop knows of a ferret breeder they can put you in touch with.

If you are a first time ferret owner with no experience in ferrets then you need to know a few facts. 1) ferrets smell. Some people find the smell offensive some don't. 2) Male ferrets smell stronger than female ferrets, but if you have him neutered it reduces the smell dramatically providing you clean them out regularly 3) I would strongly advise getting a male ferret as your first ferret because female ferrets require spaying unless you plan to breed from her (and I wouldn't recommend a first time ferret owner breeding ferrets). Female ferrets will become very ill and eventually die if they are not mated with. This is because they do not come out of season easily on their own and over time the hormones that bring her into season become toxic and make her very ill. "Jill jabs" are available at the vets that will bring her out of season, but they are expensive so it does work out a lot cheaper in the long run to have her spayed.

Oh and by the way, a male ferret is called a hob and a female is called a Jill - just in case you aren't familiar with ferret terminology :p

Can I advise you to spend some time looking on the various ferret web pages and asking your questions there. Not only will you get good advice you may actually come accross people with ferrets needing homes. If you are a first time owner I would advise taking an older one from a rescue whose temperament is known. Ferret Kits are delinquents and will take a battle of wills to train. Whereas with a rescue ferret you could get a real sweetie which would be good if it is for a child.

If there are none locally a good pet shop can arrange to get you one. Ferrets are fairly common pets and have been kept to get rid of rats for centuries. They are intelligent but can give a pretty good bite and need to be trained properly. The ferret can be petted and cuddled but rough play needs to be avoided as once they get a habit if bitting it is hard to stop. The pet shop should be able to help you decide if this is the right pet for your daughter.

Try buying Exchange and Mart or looking in your local press. Ferrets make brilliant pets. Get her a hob (male) as females need to be mated each time they come into season or else they die.
Get as big a hutch as you can afford and be sure to handle the ferret every day. They are highly intelligent and need to be kept amused. Enjoy.

Oooo-er, Missus! Don't let it get down your trousers! It might be safer to buy her a fluffy one.

Sorry, I can't give you a serious answer as I don't live in Lancashire and I don't have any experience of ferrets.

Good for you for being a caring parent!
