They had no right to do this. Under the Police Property Act they are entitled to dispose of goods only where the owner cannot be traced. You would be entitled to sue them, except that the value of the keys is not very much, even if you were to change the locks of the house -- which seems a good idea. I hope this link helps. http://www.clsdirect.org.uk/legalhelp/leaflet11.jsp?section=5&lang=en

Sixteen months is not a short period of time. Each department has its own protocols for this sort of thing. Generally somewhere around a year is normal.

Police departments are not immune from the normal afflictions of bureaucracy you will find in any government agency. It would have behooved you to be more proactive many months ago. It is not likely that anything can be done at this point.

Welcome to the CRIMINAL Justice System. If the property was part of an ongoing investigation they can keep it, basically, forever. Now, they can't just 'dispose' of things. You should check with your ex because they would've/should've been returned to him. If not, someone messed up so file a complaint!

They never returned my shotgun, even after I had served my sentence. That was a lot more expensive than a bunch of keys.

But knowing the old bill, I would change the locks asap, it is the same as if you tell them you will be away on holiday, you can guarantee you will have a break in then.

Yes if they had been taken off your ex and were not stolen he should have got them back himself. They would only have given them to someone else with his permission.
