When you're corresponding with an inmate (prisoner) in a low security correctional institution in the USA, will the letters that you write or the letters that you receive, be censored and in what way?

Any time you are corresponding to a inmate regardless of their security level their mail is opened and read. They are looking for the obvious like breakouts and illegal activity. Out going mail from the inmate usually is not read unless it is a thick letter with many pages. Incoming mail to a inmate is searched for nude pictures and other contraband. No release info can be put into letters.

Low-level, not usually. But it depends on the institution. Some do scan them for objects, and some even do read them yes. But they aren't censored, no. If something is inappropriate, it gets thrown away.

But, the amount of mail that typically comes in is huge, and not all of it can be read. It's usually done on a random basis.

Just don't put anything in with the letter, and don't say anything that you shouldn't be saying.

For regular correspondance, you shouldn't worry about it. Now, if you were a gang-leader or something of that nature, then you should probably worry.

It will depend on the correctional facility and the prisoner.

Prisoners have no expectation of privacy while they are in prison - so the facility can censor the mail if they feel it is appropriate.

It's probably likely that the incoming and outgoing mail will be read by a CO.

You should anticipate that anything that you write may be read by a third party.

someone else reads them - If you don't like it don't hang out with jailbirds or be a convicted convict serving time
