So at some point in the future our sun will use its nuclear fuel and become a red giant, when this happens it will become much larger, so large in fact that it will expand beyond the orbit of our planet, of course our planets orbit will have moved further out because of the suns loss of mass, so we get an extra 200 million years or so before the solar system is screwed. Anyway, it's really a moot point because our sun is only about halfway through its main sequence evolution, so it has another 4-5 billion years left. In which time we will either destroy ourselves, use up the resource of the planet and die out, or be saved by technology or something like that.

Our sun will not last forever. When it begins to die in about 5 million years or so, it will expand and devour mercury and venus. The earth is far enough away that it will be not devoured, however, the oceans will boil away and all life will die from the heat and fire.

After the sun expands to its maximum it will shrink to a dead start.

Long before that happens, the planet will have been evacuated to another system will a more stable star.

The sun won't die for another 5 or 10 billion years or so....so I'm not too worried about it.
Now, a GAMMA RAY BURST within a few light years from here could wipe out our atmosphere instantly without warning....so, the sun's lifespan really doesn't bother me comparatively.

There are plenty of other more immediate threats to our existence, like global climate change, nuclear war, flu pandemic, asteroid collision, etc. Why waste time worrying about something that's not going to happen for billions of years?

Wayyyyyyyy before we actually lose the sun, all life on earth will cease to exist so it really doesn't matter or pay to worry about it.

We will be LOSING the sun.

Since it won't happen during my lifetime, or my children's lifetime, or their children's lifetime...I'm not going to worry about it.
