If you are trying to dye the gravel for a fish tank I would strongly advise against it. Gravel manufacturers use very special materials to color gravel that are not avilable on the open market. Using most any product you find will only result in the death of your fish due to harsh chemicals leeching into the water.

after reading your other question regarding coral.....i strongly suggest that you do a lot more research before buying any (more?) fish.
what you should be attempting to do is recreate the fish's natural environment, tropical freshwater fish do not have coral or highly coloured gravel.
a dark gravel is best as a bright colour can make the fish insecure.
not trying to have a go at you here, it is good you are asking advice, wish others would.
but from these questions i am assuming you are new to the hobby, so my advice is to start with as much knowledge as you can get, there are so many different species of fish, most of them will not like being mixed with certain species, some grow a lot bigger than you would think by looking at the young, yet others need perfect water conditions that are slightly different to 'run of the mill' tropicals.
it is a good and rewarding hobby, but if you do not keep the tank clean and healthy all you will succeed in doing is losing your fish.

now that i've never heard of

i've seen gravel go a bit brown because of brown algae...
make the whole tank brown with tannins from bogwood or IAL (indian almond leaf).

or get coloured gravel from pet stores? (some coloured gravel has the colour wear off though...)
i wouldn't colour gravel DIY, any chemicals or paints put in fish tanks need to be triple checked that they're tank safe, which a LOT aren't, well most aren't.

What exactly are you trying to do here? Color your gravel? Add tannen to it?

Tea bags are the best way however I am still not clear as to what you are wanting to do or for what reason.
