I don't know what to wear! I am interviewing for an HR position in a professional services firm, so you would automatically think that I should wear a suit, right?

However, I already work for the company in a different position so it is only an internal interview. We have a very casual dress code - e.g. we can wear jeans every day - and I take full advantage of this. I don't particularly want all my colleagues to know that I am interviewing for a new position, and they will be extremely suspicious if I rock up wearing a suit after wearing jeans every other working day of my life.

So, do you think somewhere in the middle would be appropriate? Like not a suit, but not jeans either? Maybe nice trousers and a nice top?

I think it's always best to wear a suit. It shows that you are respecting the interviewer and are a professional person.

Since you already work there, you know the dress code. You should dress the part for the job, however.

For example, if the HR folks always wear suits, you should. If they were ties, you should. If they wear "business casual" (e.g., khakis and button down shirt), you should do AT LEAST as well (a tie might be a reasonable extra step). If they wear jeans, I'd suggest stepping up slightly. What you suggest at the end of your question seems good.

smarten up a bit definitely more than usual. Can you go to the interview and stop in the toilets on the way to put on a pair of nicer trousers or a top? So that your department don't see you dressed up? If not, smart casual should be fine. Just make sure you are impeccably groomed too. Good luck.

If the dress code is casual, I think the pants and top would be appropriate. Maybe add a jacket to wear only during the interview to top it off.

How about wearing nice casual clothes (business casual). For example a nice casual shirt (no tie), a pair of Docker's with a nice belt and a nice pair of shoes.

This would say to others that your not too formal but for your interview, it would say you were serious about the position.

Even for an internal interview, you want to make a good impression. Whatever you decide, it must be smart but not too eye-catching otherwise the interviewer may be more interested in your appearance instead of what you have to say about your experience and abilities.

Go with the suit and tie type of clothing. An HR position requires you to meet with everyone from Joe Public asking for work to executives.
Suit and tie clothing is not optional. Dress UP!

The best thing to do is wear what you always wear. If the person that interviews you has seen you before then they already have an opinion of you and your ability to dress for success. Now, you need to show them why you are the one for this job. What you wear is not near as important as what abilities you bring to the table. High light your ability to handle the new position and the rest will fall where it needs to!

You already have hit on the perfect solution - nice trousers and a nice top may get you a few questions about who your hot after-work date is with, but aren't likely to elicit questions about who your interview is with. :)
