Underrated, if anything.

It depends where you are getting you're advertisement for the team. On the world stage they are not overrated. They were humbled at the World Cup and are not looked upon as a threat. However, from ESPN they are heavily overrated, but with good reason. If there is a perception that they are better than they are, more people will watch and the sport will be more popular in this country. Yes they can beat Mexico, they can beat almost any team in a stand alone contest that they use weeks to prepare for. In a tournament setting, I would think the odds against a team like Mexico changes.
To get a true gage, the "new" Fifa rankings are as accurate as you get. Exhibitions are worth almost nothing, and the prestige of the tournament affects the points gained. They are 30 which seems right. If they want to be percieved as better (as well as pass Mexico) they better do well in the Gold Cup and Copa America. They can beat Mexico 99 out of 100 tries, but if those 99 are exhibition and the 1 is in a Tournament...

I'll try and add something that hasn't already been said.
I think we are very good but third place in the COPA is about as high as we can hope for. Our strikers , especially without Brian, are just not world class or at least not in the same class as say Brasil and Argentina.
Without Convey on the left side we have even more questions at midfeild were we basically have Dempsey and Donovan. I love Beasley but which Beasley is gonna show up ?
Defensively there are not many teams better, maybe Italy, France or England, maybe. The weakness we had on the left side in the cup seems to have been be solved. Bocanegra is having one of his best seasons and can be slide over. Conrad and Borstien have played great in the last two warm ups.
In three years at the next cup, when we can combine the under 20's midfeild and attack options with the current, still young defense I can see big thing happening.

Sure the US footballers are overrated and I don't see any chance for them on winning anything more than the Goldcup for many years. Even if the USA were the best sports country in the world, why is there any pressure from that? There's just sports the Americans don't like and so ther's little interest and less good athletes.
Besides that my theory is: The USA is the country which just cheats best, sorry.

If you think they can win the World Cup you are either very naive or your patriotic viewpoint clouds your judgement entirely. The US team is not as skilled at the rest of the teams in the World Cup. Look what teams they play against to get in there... What big competition... not
They are so very overrated, I saw their ranking in the FIFA World Cup too, what a load of crap, who ever ranks these teams is smoking smack... and after their pathetic performance in that event, not even making it threw the first round and the only reason they tied the Italians is because the Italians had an "own goal" and lets face it Buffon didn't see that one coming... They didn't score a single goal on their own.. Arrogant they are, talented they are not...
At the world cup every other team stayed in a local hotel mingling in the city but the US team had to stay on a US military base so they were around other Americans, they actually reported this on the US stations.... and Landon Donavan the great white hope couldn't even hack it in the Bundesliga, he had to come home with his tail between his legs.... How sad and pathetic.... These people need to get their heads out of their *** and realize there is a big world out there besides their home country and they are not doing them any favours coddling them.
I think of the US league is like the AHL, David Beckham is at the end of his career, he lost his spot on the English National team, he was benched for most of Real Madrid's season, really the guy is way past his prime but he will look like a GOD playing in that league.

They were overrated when they were ranked no. 5 in the FIFA world rankings---the world cup showed they did not deserve that. Right now they are around 19 or 20 I believe, and that probably is about right. The gold cup and Copa America will show a lot more.

No, the USA team is very competitive and fun to watch... and I disagree with them having pressure since soccer is not mainstream in USA (if they lose the NY post won't have a lot of coverage bashing the team) as compared to Europe and South America (Those team really have pressure).
PD: USA has lost a step internationally in team sports lately (most notable Basketball and Baseball).

They're definitely NOT overrated in the US. People can't watch them on TV because they're not shown very often, so they turn to football or basketball, creating huge wealth in those sports. So the US soccer players don't get recognition NOR the money to be overrated. I think American athletes in general may be overrated, but not our soccer players. It's still a "young" sport here.

Yes they are.
Like everything else that the US does, they think they can just buy their way into the football giants. This is a country that has refused to accept the name of the sport and calls it by another name while the rest of the world calls it football.
