When you look up at the sun, you are seeing millions, if not billions or trillions of nuclear explosions happening at once on the surface of the sun. The heat and light we get is the result of these explosions.
These reactions are known as fusion reactions, where instead of an atom being broken apart (as in fission), atoms get fused together to form other atoms. The fusion is occuring due to the intense heat and gravity on the sun, which drive the atoms together. In the case of the sun, two hydrogen atoms combine to form one helium atom in virtually every reaction in the sun.

Fusion: The Sun contains hydrogen atoms and the gravity makes it so dense, that the atoms start to fuse and become helium atoms. When doing this, energy is released in the form of heat and light.
