okay so we're doing 19th century history at school, and something's confusing me: in the 1850's or so, the Dems were more like the Reps of today and vice-versa. when/ why did that change?

The change happened slowly. The republican party was founded basically to stop the expansion of slavery. Lincoln was the first Republican president. After emancipation most former slaves became Republicans. The South was run for the most part by republicans in the years following the Civil war. Then little by little the democrates obtained control of the southern states. As they regained control of the south the Dems attempted and succeed in disenfranchising the African Americans causing the beginning of segregation. During the civil rights movement the Dems started to change, the party split between those for and those against civil rights. The democratic party and now is the group the promoted civil rights. Most of the old school democrates having lost on the civil rights issues have joined the Republican party.

noooooo.... you're so off in this one. we are no longer right here finding out on sides using fact of a few clique. We (as republicans) be attentive to what's going to happen if the Dems get the potential they are looking for. they're going to make a multitude in a foreign places u . s . a . that we adore. We (US struggling with women and men persons) have laid our lives on the line to guard the way of existence that we adore. we are no longer approximately to take a seat down and enable them to take it removed from us.
