To me, it feels a bit stupid. If the Rider is waving around his sword, surely it's not going to be subtle. Sure, his reputation will increase, but having a colored sword isn't going to make the Rider more powerful.

The elven smith who makes the swords colors the swords out of tradition. I think it is a means of identification.

Ok,i have 3 answers. I support all of them.

answer 1 (logical answer): because it is a book, and the author wanted it to be that way.

answer 2 (answer as if the books are real): It doesnt have to be, but it is like a team wearing there colors. A rider's magic is automaticaly blue if they have a blue dragon, so when the sword is created for them by the elves, the elf that makes it makes it the color of the dragon to support the dragon and to continue tradition

Answer 3: Get a life and stop paying so much attention to fantasasy books

Answer three is kind of uncalled for, but there is a grain of truth in it.

and cookyaustinchic, they arent made out of the dragon scales, its made to look like the scales!

Yeah, well, it's just one of those thing Paolini likes to do. he loves to play around with the colors and names. Like Saphira means "blue or sapphire in color".
Maybe since Brom's dragon was blue...no, wait, it waas Morzan's swrod anyway, so maybe he just liked the color or something...
so in a final answer to your question, a Rider's sword actually doesn't correspond to the color of the dragon, because I don't think Morzan's dragon was blue...was it?
I don't think the book said...

ERAGON THE MOVIE COMING MARCH 20!!!
WHEN IS THAT BOOK 3 COMING OUT!!!
HURRY PAOLINI!
BUT MAKE THAT BOOK AWESOME!

GO SAPHIRA!

You need to read Anne McCaffrey 's books. She has something like DRAGON RIDERS and Paolini likes her books too!

because the swords are made from the dragon's scales. You find this out in 'Eldest'.

It's just the way Christopher Paolini wanted it to be. You gotta admit, that makes it all colour coded and cool, eh.
