I want to know what vaccinations to give to a pregnant mare. She is now 8 months pregnant. Is it ok to get a coggins on her? can i get her west nile? what dewormer is safe for her and the unborn foal? what other vaccinations should she get and when? what about the foal when it is first born? (due in early-mid June) When should I stop trailering her around? she is very calm and quiet in the trailer though. She loves going places and I was wondering if it would be okay if I took her to the local playday a few times. I know I should quit riding her like a month before she is due, but was wondering if it would still be okay to stand around bareback at the playday and maybe trot around the barrels if she is up to it. this is her first foal.

Riding a pregnant mare should cause no problems as long as she is in good health. If you are/were riding her before she was bred, then continue with your normal routine up until about a week before she is due. (Almost the same as a pregnant woman who is healthy and active)

Vaccinations should be given in her last trimester, especially the rhinopnumonitus vacine. Coggins won't hurst as was mentioned in another answer. It is a simple blood test.

However, if there are any sick horses (colds or otherwise) keep your mare away from them, in fact, I would take her home.

I had these same questions when I had my first mare bred. These are the same answers my vet gave me.

Good luck and have a healthy foal!

Sure you can get a coggins on her, it just requires pulling a blood sample. Most wormers are safe for pregnant mares, check the label. All the usual vaccinations are ok. She should have had rhino vaccinations, but I wouldn't worry about it at this late date. Riding her won't hurt her at all, just don't over do it. Walking and trotting are fine just don't get her too hot. The exercise will do her good.

I think you should ask the vet. Maybe she shouldn't get vaccines now that she's pregnant, they could harm the baby.
