AVG antivirus is free, and can be found at http://free.grisoft.com/doc/2/lng/us/tpl/v5 . AVG also has an anti-spyware product. Spybot is another well known free anti-Spyware product, it's website is http://www.spybot.info/en/index.html . To protect yourself from common viruses and other threats, I'd recommend using the free Firefox web browser ( http://getfirefox.com ) , as opposed to Internet Explorer. Also, if you're running Windows XP, you should enable the built-in Windows Firewall - it may help prevent some other types of viruses.

I always use AVG. Although they have a pay version (and will pester you to upgrade to it at regular intervals), you can always find a completely free version of AVG Antivirus here:
http://free.grisoft.com/

It works very well for me and everyone I've installed it for.

If you do get a virus and need a "virus killer" so to speak, AVG should handle it. If it doesn't or can't, most antivirus companies (like Symantec and Norton) release special virus removal tools free for anyone to use. Check their websites if you need to.

I have been using Avast for 3 years and have never had any problems. I also use Spybot - Search & Destroy and use Ad-Aware. All three are great programs, and have given me no problems.
