it depends on there enviroment if it is to cold they will sleep and not eat if it is warm in your house they wont if it is 30 degrees where they are they will sleep but if it is 70 the next day they will wake up and go back to sleep when it gets cold again when most turtles hybernate that is because that is when they grow the most so getting them to sleep is a good thing the thing is keeping them comfortable is this turtle is acting fine i would not worry at all i have a tortoise and where i am it was 30 yesterday and he slept but today it is almost 70 and he is at the door wanting the warm sun

ALL REPTILES AND AMPHIBIANS SHOULD BE PUT THROUGH A WINTERING CYCLE. WETHER IT JUST BE COOLING THINGS DOWN AND SHORTER LIGHT PERIODS, TO IMITATE NORMAL DAY & NIGHT CYCLES ETC. TO FULL BLOWN HIBERNATION. I'VE KEPT SPECIES THAT WOULD LITTERALLY NOT BE SEEN FOR THE LONGEST TIME, AND OTHERS THAT I KEPT AT THE SEASON I INITIATED AND PRODUCED. WHEN YOU DO IT YOURSELF BY ADJUSTING LIGHT, HEAT, ETC. YOU ACTUALLY ARE GIVING THEM A NATURAL HEALTHY EFFECT ON THEIR CYCLES AS A WHOLE. AND ALOT OF THE SPECIES, OF BOTH REPTILES AND AMPHIBIANS THAT YOU WOULD WANT TO BREED IF YOU HAD THEM IN THE FIRST PLACE WON'T EVER BREED, OR ARE INCAPABLE OF A BREEDING PERIOD BECAUSE THEY HAVEN'T BEEN GIVEN THE GENETICALLY BUILT IN SYSTEM MARKER TO CHANGE UP & DO SO. LETS SAY YOU WERE GOING TO BREED ARGENTINE HORNED FROGS ETC. YOU HAVE TO GIVE THEM A SEASON TO INDUCE BREEDING. THAT'S JUST THE WAY IT IS. BUT YOU COULD HAVE AN IGUANA THAT JUST RUNS AROUND THE HOUSE AND IS EXPOSED TO THE SAME TEMPS AS YOU ETC. & THEY'LL DO JUST FINE. I THINK IF ANYTHING THAT THEY CAN JUST Have the natural sunlight photo periods effect them enough, to were they can stay a healthy critter. My snapping turtle eats etc. all through the winter, she gets cold becAUSE OF THE NATURAL WEATHER, BUT SHE DOESN'T GO INTO A LONG BOUT OF SLOWED SLEEP, LIKE A HIBERNATION. ALL IN ALL?? EVERY ONE SPECIES IS DIFFERENT AND THE BEST THING YOU CAN DO IS FIND REALLY GOOD, TRULY INFORMATIVE BOOKS, (I WASN'T RAISED ON COMPS!) ON EACH CERTAIN SPECIES. AND THE BEST PUBLICATION OUT THERE, IS THE MONTHLY "REPTILES" MAGAZINE!
CHECK IT OUT!

Yes, they can but its not wise and it is very dangerous. The turtle can die because we normally dont have the things they need to survive the cold in an aquarium.
The only reason you should hibernate your turtle is if you would like to breed him. Other than that, there really is no reason to do so as it doesn't contribute to the health or well-being and can possibly kill him.
