my advice is....
if you can't think of your own ideas at this stage - give up!
you clearly don't have the imagination required for your chosen course

If you don't want to do the books/cd/LP covers thing, why not look at exhibitions and how illustration is used to explain the exhibits (eg picking a science exhibition should give you a unique viewpoint to start from and also lots of scope where illustration is needed, for example in astronomy/human or plant biology etc).

Don't mind R MUTT my upstairs neighbour, we have all had blocks at times particularly when under pressure to be creative, what I would suggest is relax, take time out, meditate, breathe, clear your mind.

Then when you have had time out, think of what inspires you, what YOU like to look at, what gives you that tingle.

If I were you I would look at children's book illustrations, I know you said books (overdone), but children's books still hold that kind of wonder and imagination that adults have lost, in that genre you can be free in your creativity.

For my final in art foundation (many moons ago) I did a project in motion, you know when a diver leaps off the board and you see him/her tumbling in short stop continuous motion until they hit the water (got best in year). Medium was chalk and oil pastel.

You can use that if you like - it was so long ago no-one would remember, anyway I don't care !.

What are you good at? Probably the best place to start, show off your talent!
If your illustration is more people based how about doing something about people you admire, capture the qualities they have visually.
If you're more of a typographic illustrator why not try illustrating proverbs, sayings or quotes.
Or how about combining the two and typoographically trying to illustrate a person?

When I was studying we went to places to inspire us (Kew Gardens and The V&A amongst others). Why not go to a museum, exhibition or something and see what inspires you?

Well with the rising interest in witchcraft and the suernatural in popular culture I would suggest a new web design for the War Craft games making yourself the leading character be it the evil or good one.

It's bizarre but I'd be interested in all the characters you see on naff greeting cards and putting them in situations with really cool characters from high end cards (Beaumonde style). Like in a canteen during a break between card scenes. Or a really stylish female character in a bar with a 'forever friends' bear...?

how about the ww2 poster theme but contemporize it by doing posters for mcdonalds or something. e.g. ronald mcdonald standing and pointing with the words underneath saying "we want you!"
